WHAT ARE MASTER GARDENERS?
Master Gardeners (MGs) are from all walks of life, and volunteer on behalf of Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). We receive specialized training in environmental horticulture. MGs serve as partners with VCE to inform and work with communities, leaders, industry, and individuals in protecting and enhancing our environment.
WHAT DO MASTER GARDENERS DO?
Originally, VCE Master Gardeners were recruited to meet the community need for answering consumer horticulture questions. MGs still do that and so much more!
- Help Desk
- Conduct Workshops and Seminars
- Offer a Home Gardeners Horticulture Course
- Therapeutic Gardening Programs
- D-Day Memorial Victory Garden with School Groups
- Speak to Community Groups
- Spring Plant Sales with Clinics
- Community Newsletter and Social Media Outreach

Some volunteers work directly with the public. Other activities are “behind the scene” and provide much-needed support and organization to VCE educational events. Volunteer times are available during the day, evening, and sometimes on the weekend. MGs volunteer hundreds of hours each year in support of VCE projects. Consider becoming an active Master Gardener volunteer within your community.
WHO ARE Bedford Extension Master Gardeners?
We are a diverse group of people. We share an interest in gardening, of course, but that interest can express itself in many different ways! Many like to “get their hands dirty,” while others have different garden specialties. Most importantly, Master Gardeners are people just like you, who come together to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with each other and the citizens of Bedford County.
HOW DO I BECOME A MASTER GARDENER?
Initial training includes 15 computer-based study modules and hands-on labs. Then each trainee must volunteer 50 hours in approved VCE MG projects. Upon completion of training and internship time, they graduate with the title of VCE MG! To retain the title, simply volunteer 20 hours per year in approved VCE MG projects, and complete 8 or more hours of continuing education. Learn more at http://bedfordmastergardeners.org/join-us/
HELP DESK: Volunteers are available year-round to answer horticultural questions and help solve your gardening problems. Learn more at http://bedfordmastergardeners.org/help-desk-articles/
